  10.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To study the influence of lipid peroxidation on lymphocyte
  11.        function and nuclear chromatin degradation in the course of
  12.        immunodeficiency progression in HIV-1 infection. METHODS: 37 HIV-1
  13.        infection patients (WB and ELISE) persons were investigated. T and B
  14.        cells subsets were counted by cytofluorimetric assay. Biochemical
  15.        criteria of lymphocyte function were: activity of manthine oxidase, NAD
  16.        and NADPH oxidase, and the enzymes of glutathione metabolism. Chromatin
  17.        degradation products (polydexy nucleoproteides) and the intensity of DNA
  18.        single-strand breaks were studied by spectrophotometric assay. Lipid
  19.        peroxidation intensity was assessed by the determination of
  20.        thiobarbituric acid--reactive substances. RESULTS: Lipid peroxidation
  21.        intensity in HIV-1 patients' lymphocytes was significantely increased
  22.        compared to control. Its dynamics was parallel to that of chromatin
  23.        degradation process and inversely correlated with the parameters of
  24.        lymphocytes function. CONCLUSIONS: Lipid peroxidation takes an important
  25.        part in the development of lymphocyte dysfunction and, hence, of immune
  26.        deficiency state in HIV-1 infection.
